In all, 85 men and women were discovered by officials from the Department for Combating Illegal Immigration (DCIM) after the truck they were on was stopped at a checkpoint near Garyan, to the south of the capital.
Crouched, unable to stand, they were found in a space less than a metre high, beneath tons of concrete bricks, which were being held up by single sheets of wood, across the length of the truck. They are now under arrest, along with the truck’s Libyan driver, and have been transferred to the Tweisha detention centre, near the airport.
They are believed to have been coming from the desert town of Sabha, a major migration node on the South West border of Libya , which is normally associated with people coming from West Africa (See Migrant Report map for reference).
